KIA AND CHARLES

Kia
&
Charles

OUR STORY

Kia and Charles’ love story began in the bustling streets of New York City — a city alive with possibility. Yet, amidst the chaos of this city, we met in an unconventionally quiet place — the library. Kia habitually studied in the same area — where Charles would often “study” beside her, always managing to find the seat right next to hers.

Starting as friends in the same study group, but somewhere between books and coffee breaks, Charles became the person Kia looked forward to speaking to — irresistibly easy to talk to. Study sessions turned into walks home then lunch then dinner and dates. Chatting turned into hours long conversations about our hopes and dreams. Slowly, the girl he sat beside in the library became the person he didn’t want to be without.

One of our first hangouts consisted of a day of interviews for our summer internships. We ended up interviewing for the very same position and were both offered positions — two people, two interviews, one shared future quietly unfolding. We spent the summer working side by side; it felt like we were inseparable. Two young dreamers building futures, unknowingly building one together. Those early years we spent in law school became some of the most meaningful memories of our relationship, which we will cherish forever. Full of ambition, hope, passion, and friendship, those years shaped the foundation of who we are together —not just as a couple, but as best friends.

Three months after we started dating, we took our first trip as a couple — to Capri, Amalfi, Positano, and Naples, Italy. What was intended to be a fun summer vacation became the backdrop to the moments we felt this could last forever. Under the moonlight of the Mediterranean Sea, after long dinners filled with pasta and wine, we danced by the glistening water to the songs of Dean Martin classics. Charles sang about the “pizza pie in the sky” and we smiled together at lyrics celebrating a wedding ring on her finger — not knowing how prophetic those songs would feel one day. Somewhere between dancing in the moonlit streets, sharing pastries and espresso, and sitting on “our” bench overlooking the island of Capri, we fell in love.

As a testament to where our love began, six years later, Charles proposed as the Mediterranean sun set again in Amalfi, Italy at the renowned Monastero Santa Rosa — the cliffs glowing in hues of violet, light blue, and orange, the sea shimmering like glass below. With the horizon painted in pastels, he asked Kia to spend forever with him — returning to the very hills where they first imagined what forever could feel like. The evening was followed by a private, and very Charles, Michelin-starred candlelight dinner — a reflection of the love they built: intimate and intentional.

Our relationship has always been about partnership, meaningful conversation, goofy moments, and living il dolce far niente (“the sweetness of doing nothing”) — about finding joy not only in our grander travels, but in simpler moments together, walking our dog, Ghost, watching our favorite shows and movies, debating everything and anything for hours on the couch, shopping at our favorite stores, and eating way too much food. It has been about growing side by side since we were young and 23, and finding home in one another no matter where we are in the world. We hope you join us across the world as we share our love again, but now with you all, in Italy this June — in the very country which holds so many of our most treasured memories. We can’t wait to celebrate the beginning of this next chapter of our lives with you, and a love which began with two desks sat beside each other in a law school library.

VILLAS TO VISIT

VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO

One of Lake Como’s most iconic villas, Villa del Balbianello is set dramatically on a wooded peninsula overlooking the water. Its perfectly manicured terraces, cypress-lined paths, and panoramic views make it a standout, especially vibrant in early summer. Villa del Balbianello is a renowned filming location, most famous for hosting major scenes in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) as Naboo and Casino Royale (2006) as a convalescence retreat. Other notable films shot there include A Month by the Lake (1995) and various documentaries.

From Cernobbio, take a taxi or short bus ride to the Cernobbio ferry dock, then board a ferry to Lenno (about 30–40 minutes). From Lenno’s dock, follow the clearly marked lakeside path for roughly 20 minutes to reach the villa entrance, a pleasant walk with lake views. Alternatively drive or take a taxi from Cernobbio to Lenno (about 35–40 minutes), then park near the village center. From there, walk approximately 20 minutes along the wooded path leading to the villa.

VILLA D'ESTE

Originally a 16th-century aristocratic residence, Villa d’Este is now one of the world’s most storied luxury hotels, set along the southern edge of Lake Como. Its formal Italian gardens, centuries-old trees, and grand lakeside terraces embody old-world elegance, making it as much a cultural landmark as a place to stay. Enjoy lunch overlooking the lake. Reservations required to enter hotel premises and restaurants.

Villa d’Este is located within Cernobbio, just minutes from Cernobbio. It can be reached easily by taxi, local bus, or a pleasant lakeside walk of roughly 20–25 minutes

VILLA CARLOTTA

Villa Carlotta is famed for its expansive botanical gardens and neoclassical art collection. In June, flowering plants and shaded paths create one of the most visually striking garden experiences on the lake.

Villa Carlotta is best reached by ferry from Cernobbio or Como to Tremezzo, with the crossing taking about 30–40 minutes. From the Tremezzo dock, the villa is a short, well-signed walk along the lakeside road.

VILLA MEZZI

Elegant and serene, Villa Melzi features landscaped gardens that stretch gently along the lakeshore. Its blend of exotic plants, classical sculptures, and water views makes it ideal for a peaceful afternoon stroll.

VILLA MONASTERO

Villa Monastero combines a former monastery with one of the lake’s most refined botanical gardens. The long lakeside walkway, lined with citrus trees and palms, offers continuous views across the water to the mountains beyond.

PASSALACQUA

Passalacqua is an 18th-century villa-turned-luxury retreat, celebrated for its romantic gardens and intimate, residential atmosphere. Overlooking Lake Como, its terraced grounds, historic architecture, and refined interiors offer a more secluded and understated alternative to the lake’s grand hotels. Enjoy lunch overlooking the lake. Reservations required to enter hotel premises and restaurants.

CITIES TO SEE

BELLAGIO

Bellagio is Lake Como’s most iconic town, known for its steep cobbled stairways, elegant shops, and panoramic views. Stroll the old town, then retreat to the tranquil lakeside gardens of Villa Melzi before ending the day with an aperitivo by the water.

From Cernobbio, walk or taxi to the Cernobbio ferry dock and take a direct ferry to Bellagio, with a journey time of about one hour.

COMO

Como combines historic streets, lively cafés, and excellent shopping. Ride the funicular to Brunate for sweeping views over the lake’s distinctive shape, finishing with a walk to the Faro Voltiano lighthouse.

Como town is the simplest destination from Cernobbio, located just a few minutes away by taxi, local bus, or a longer lakeside walk.

VARENNA

Romantic and quietly charming, Varenna offers pastel houses, calm harbors, and intimate lakeside paths. Walk the Passeggiata degli Innamorati, linger at a waterfront café, and enjoy a slower pace than neighboring Bellagio.

To reach Varenna, travel first to Como ferry terminal (a short taxi or bus ride from Cernobbio), then take a fast ferry or hydrofoil across the lake. The total journey takes roughly one hour and delivers you directly into Varenna’s compact, picturesque harbor.

LENNO

Lenno is a quiet village best known for Villa del Balbianello, one of Lake Como’s most spectacular estates. Terraced gardens, sculpted hedges, and sweeping lake views make it a highlight, particularly lush and vibrant in June.

Lenno is best reached by ferry from Cernobbio or Como, with a crossing time of approximately 30–40 minutes. The route offers views of wooded shores and villas before arriving near Villa del Balbianello, Lenno’s main attraction.

MENAGGIO

Menaggio is relaxed and sun-loving, with a flat promenade ideal for strolling and lakeside dining. Its popular lido makes it one of the best places on the lake for swimming, sunbathing, and long summer afternoons.

Menaggio is easily reached by ferry from Cernobbio or Como, depending on the schedule, with travel times ranging from 45 minutes to just over an hour. Approaching by water highlights Menaggio’s wide promenade and relaxed, open layout.
